Polyaigos is the largest uninhabited island in the Aegean, and it has stayed that way by law. Its 18 square kilometres carry no village, no road, no harbour wall. The name means "many goats": a semi-wild herd still grazes the limestone terraces, watched over by nobody.
The island belongs largely to the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian on Patmos, a monastic holding that survived the Ottoman centuries and the Greek state's later land reforms.
Geology explains the colour. Polyaigos and neighbouring Kimolos sit on the same volcanic arc as Milos, where hydrothermal fluids bleached the rock into white kaolin and pale sulphur yellow. Rainwater cut the soft stone into fjord-like inlets — Mersini, Ammoura, Gerakas — where the seabed is white sand and the water reads a saturated blue-green that photographs poorly and rewards swimming.
